High School Football: Dunbar honors five players at signing ceremony

Mother Nature held things up for a day, but two of Dunbar high school’s elite athletes made their college choices official Thursday.

Wide receiver Joseph Scates and running back Tavion Thomas both ended the long recruiting trail by accepting full-ride scholarships to Division I schools.

Thomas, who had originally made a verbal commitment to Oklahoma, will end up instead making a short trip down the road to the University of Cincinnati.

“It’s just close to home for me,” Thomas said after Thursday’s signing ceremony. “I feel like it’s the right place for me, my future and my career.”

Scates had been recruiting by several big name schools, including the University of Alabama at one time, but opted to continue his education on and off the field at Iowa State.

“It means a lot to me,” Scates said. “Just knowing I have the opportunity to play at the next level for free, knowing my Mom doesn’t have to pay for my education.”

Three other Dunbar players were part of the ceremony. Receiver Jalani Allen is headed to Malone University in Canton. Jamarius Thorpe and quarterback Jamar Walker will play at Urbana University.
