Alter grad retires from NFL after 11 seasons with Jets

“I DECLARE RETIREMENNNTTTTTTT!” he wrote. “I will be signing a one day deal with (the New York Jets) next week so I can retire a Jet. Thank you to all! J! E! T! S! Jets! Jets! Jets!”

Mangold thanked the Centerville Wee Elks, Alter High School, Ohio State and the Jets in a letter he posted to Twitter.

Mangold, 34, played his entire career (2006-16) with the Jets, starting 164 games at center. He was limited to eight games in 2016 because of a foot injury and was released by the Jets in February 2017.

Mangold didn’t sign with a new team after being released and sat out the entire season.

"I couldn't get my foot to feel right and I wasn't about to go out there and steal checks or anything," Mangold told the SNY Jets podcast last October. "I think it's been a process to get my foot in the best position to get me going and if that happens maybe we'll see down the line."

Mangold played in 42 games for Ohio State. He was a true freshman in 2002 when the Buckeyes won the national title and a captain as a senior in 2005. He was a three-year starter. The Jets drafted him with the 29th pick of the first round in the 2006 NFL Draft.
