Meet the Dayton Flyers freshmen: Jalen Crutcher

Anthony Grant is far from the only new face in the gym for the Dayton Flyers this fall.

The first-year Flyers coach has five scholarship true freshmen on the roster, too.

Here is what you need to know about Jalen Crutcher.

Position: Point guard

Measurements: 6-1, 161

Hometown: Memphis, Tenn.

Noteworthy: He averaged 18 points, four assists and two steals per game as a senior at Ridgeway High School. Crutcher is a three-star prospect ranked No. 5 in his home state and No. 328 nationally. He was the No. 65 point guard in the 2017 class.

How’d he get here? Crutcher originally signed with Chattanooga but was released from his scholarship after the Moccs lost their coach to UMass. He chose to sign with Dayton in May after considering reclassifying to the 2018 class.

First impressions of Dayton and the Miami Valley: “Dayton is kind of quiet. You know, Memphis is known for being loud.” He hasn’t tried any of the local barbecue joints yet.

Crutcher on Crutcher: “I like to get out and run without even running plays. Like get out and run so we won’t even have to run plays, that’s what he wants us to do.”

Grant on Crutcher: “He’s got a really good basketball IQ for a freshman. He’s got a good level of toughness about him. I’ve been impressed with his ability to handle everything we’ve thrown at him in terms of the magnitude and bulk of the workload in the weight room, classroom and practice. A lot of times that can be overwhelming for a freshman over the course of the first few months. He’s handled that very well.”
