Meyer on Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback race: ‘All three are close’

Ohio State will play spring game at 1:45 p.m. Saturday

Wisconsin cancelled its spring game. Michigan cancelled its spring game. Iowa State did the same.

However, the threat of rain hasn’t changed Ohio State’s plans. As of Wednesday, the game will still go on as planned at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Ohio Stadium. It will be the last chance for the three quarterbacks competing for the starting job — Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow and Tate Martell — to make their case before preseason practices begin in the summer.

“All three are close,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Wednesday on a conference call featuring Big Ten coaches. “There are times you wish you’d have one guy separate, but it’s certainly not because of poor performance. It’s because all three want the job. Some decisions are going to have to be made, but right now I can’t name one.”

Ohio State’s last week of spring practice continued Wednesday, and Meyer said the quarterbacks had their best practice. He said they are three “good ones” but wouldn’t elaborate on who has the advantage entering the spring game.

“I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves,” Meyer said, “and a lot of things I won’t share with everyone else, what’s going on in house, but I’ve been in worse situations where you don’t have one. We just have to do right by the team and right by the players.”

Here are some other highlights of Meyer’s comments Wednesday:

Recruiting visits: Ohio State will have a number of potential recruits in attendance at the spring game. This is the first year recruits can make official visits during the spring of their junior year. Ohio State invited players who are considering making early decisions.

“We don’t want to have people visit who aren’t going to decide until next December or even next January,” Meyer said. “That’s too long to hold somebody, so we’re being very selective.”

Position battles: In addition to the quarterback spot, Meyer said safety is a position to watch. Jordan Fuller has one job wrapped up.

“He played well last year and he has been one of our best players in the spring,” Meyer said. “The other safety spot is between Isaiah Pryor and Jahsen Wint and Brendon White.”

On the offensive line, Meyer said Malcolm Pridgeon “is starting to earn a little playing time,” but he doesn’t know what the starting lineup will be. He said Brady Taylor, the favorite to start at center, has had a very good spring.

At tight end, Meyer said, Luke Farrell “has kind of advanced in front of the other guys, but we’re still trying to finalize that.”

Great story: Meyer praised right tackle Thayer Munford and said he’s earned a starting job on the offensive line.

“He’s had a great spring,” Meyer said. “He’s a great kid. There are some negatives in college football, but there are a lot of positives, and this is one of the positives. It’s one of the great stories.”

Freshman progress: Defensive tackle Tommy Togiai became the first freshman of the 2018 class to lose his black stripe. Ohio State freshmen wear the stripe on their helmets until they prove themselves to the coaches.

“He just did everything right,” Meyer said. “He’s a great guy to have on your team.”
