NFL Draft: 5 highlights from Billy Price’s first Bengals presser

Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Billy Price had his introductory press conference Friday at Paul Brown Stadium, and it was clear the former Ohio State center is more than comfortable and more than willing to get in front of the media.

Price spoke for nearly 15 minutes, giving an insight into his background, his personality and his plans moving forward after the Bengals used the 21st overall pick on him.

Here are five highlights from what Price had to say:

On how different his personality is on and off the field…

“You have to be able to turn that switch on and off. You’ve got to be a high character guy, somebody who’s approachable and will be that guy people will talk to, especially if you’re going to be an offensive lineman who’s supposed to head a program and be the face of the program, you have to be somebody with high character, high morals. And then once you get on that field, you’ve got to flip that switch and you’ve got to be able to have no problem tearing somebody’s face off.”

On how a rookie gets the respect of veterans…

“I think for me it’s shut your mouth and go to work. I’m not a rah-rah, big flashy kind of guy. I need to know my job is taken care of. Playing offensive line, if your name isn’t being called, it’s probably a good thing.”

On whether he expects to be a Day 1 starter…

“To work to compete to be a Day 1 starter, absolutely. There’s nothing giving at all in this league. There’s nothing given to get to this part in my journey. There’s a lot more work to continue to go.”

On what it says about him always being the guy in front of the media in good times and bad…

“For me, it’s don’t run from adversity. It’s a logical, black-and-white world. If you lost, you didn’t execute. I have no problem owning up and saying ‘Hey, I could have done this better.’ I think that’s attractive for teams because I’m not going to BS somebody. I’m going to keep it very honest and be up front with somebody. If I didn’t get my job done, I didn’t get it done and I need to get better. I was always told Jerry Emig, our media guy at Ohio State, I said, ‘I’ll talk.’ I have no problems with this, because everybody wants to crucify our quarterback or crucify our offensive coordinator. I have no problem saying ‘Hey, I’ll address the questions and tell them not to worry about it.’

On whether any old Ohio State-Michigan feelings will come out in camp when he goes against Bengals defensive tackle and former Wolverine Ryan Glasgow…

“I mean it’s still part of it. He went to the team up north and I went to Ohio State and we’ll leave it at that. I remember playing him specifically. The last weekend in November we’ll have a little bet. But it can’t be shave my head, because I already do that.”
