Recruiting roundup: Taking stock of who Dayton is pursuing

Flyers have made three scholarship offers this week

The recruiting never stops in college basketball. It’s hard to keep track of all the players the Dayton Flyers are recruiting.

While most of the focus has been on the 2019 class, the 2020 class also became more important earlier this month because coaches could make direct contact with rising juniors starting June 15. Dayton even has a couple of offers out for 2021. It’s not as far away as it seems.

Here’s a quick glance at who Dayton is recruiting, based on reported offers:

What class has the most offers: Dayton has made at least 16 offers to the class of 2019. The class of 2020 has received seven offers, including three this week. Two members of the 2021 class have received offers.

What position is Dayton recruiting the most: Dayton is recruiting nine guards in the class of 2019 — these numbers will change, of course — and seven forwards. It is recruiting four guards in the class of 2020 and three forwards. All three offers reported this week have gone to 2020 forwards:  Mo Njie, John Hugley and Bayron Matos-Garcia.

Where is Dayton recruiting: Two of the recent offers have gone to Ohio juniors: Centerville’s Njie and Brush High School’s Hugley. Another 2019 recruit, Andre Gordon, is from Sidney. A 2020 recruit, Zeb Jackson, is from the Toledo area. Dayton has also shown interest in Xenia’s Samari Curtis and Reynoldsburg’s Tre Williams.

» EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Grant talks about offseason

Distance isn’t a limit for Dayton, however. It is recruiting numerous players from the east coast and the south and even one from Phoenix, Jovan Blacksher Jr., and two from Fresno, Calif.: Prince Gillam and Ismael Cruz.

Dayton has pursued several players from coach Anthony Grant’s home state, Florida, since he took over, and the New York City area and the Dominican Republic, both areas familiar to assistant coach Ricardo Greer, have been well scouted by Dayton.

What level of player is Dayton recruiting: The Flyers had one of the top 2019 recruits, Kira Lewis, on campus last season, though his recruiting took off soon after that, and everyone from Indiana to Kentucky to Kansas are now after him.

They have also offered scholarships to these top-150 players on 247Sports.com’s list of 2019 recruits: Lester Quinones (71st) and Tyson Etienne (134th). Curtis ranks 93rd. Tre Mann, another player Dayton recruited, ranks 36th.

How many players does Dayton need: Dayton has two open scholarships for 2018 and will have another scholarship opening in 2019 with the departure of Josh Cunningham. The seniors in 2020 will be Ryan Mikesell, Trey Landers and Jhery Matos.
