Recruiting: Trotwood’s Amari Davis staying patient

With the spring AAU season underway, Amari Davis is staying the course.

The Trotwood-Madison star junior guard listed offers from Miami University, Cleveland State, Akron, Toledo and IUPUI when the Rams finished their regular season with a loss in the Division II state championship game to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary in March

After two weekends playing for the C2K Elite AAU team, nothing has changed – and that doesn’t seem to bother the 6-foot-3 shooter much.

“It’s going good,” Davis said of his recruitment after watching senior teammate Myles Belyeu sign with Saginaw Valley State. “I still hold the five offers that I mentioned (in March), but I’m sure more are going to roll in with my hard work.”

Others staying in touch include Xavier, Ohio State and Cincinnati, and Davis remains interested in them.

The coaching change at Xavier – assistant Travis Steele was promoted after Chris Mack left for Louisville – hasn’t influenced his recruitment, nor has OSU snagging a commitment from Alonzo Gaffney, the No. 1-ranked player in Ohio for 2019.

“I’m going to do what the coach says. I’m that kind of player. I’m coachable. Whatever coach needs me to do, I’ll do,” he said. “I like Gaffney’s game. I played with him maybe one summer. We kind of jelled together when we played.”

At this point, Davis is looking at making a college decision after his senior season is over.

While most players used to lock in their destination during the early signing period in November, waiting until spring is a growing trend.

“I’m just waiting to view all my options,” he said. “I’m looking for a school where I can feel at home and the coaches treat me like family. Good players around me, good environment, good academics.”

Their frontcourt players were all 6-8 or shorter and weighed 223 pounds or less, and they were moved around inside like chess pieces. Love scored 13 of his season-high 20...
