Reds lose player to Atlanta Braves

Phil Gosselin’s time with the Cincinnati Reds is officially over.

The Atlanta Braves claimed the infielder off waivers Thursday afternoon. They assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate.

Gosselin, 29, was signed in the offseason to provide a veteran presence on the Cincinnati bench, but he went 3 for 24 (.125) at the plate with eight strikeouts and a home run.

He was originally a draft pick of the Braves in 2010 and spent parts of three seasons with the club, batting .282 in 70 games.

The other veteran bench player brought in during the offseason – Cliff Pennington – is also gone as the team has gone younger following a disastrous 3-15 start.

Gosselin and Pennington have been replaced by 25-year-olds Alex Blandino and Rosell Herrera.

The Reds also announced left-handed reliever Amir Garrett has been placed on the bereavement list.
