Scoochie Smith to play in NBA Summer League

Former UD standout to play for Cavaliers in Las Vegas

Former Dayton Flyers point guard Scoochie Smith will play for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nev. Play starts Friday.

The Cavaliers announced their Summer League roster on Tuesday. Among the other players is their top draft pick, Collin Sexton, of Alabama. Cavaliers assistant coach James Posey, a former Xavier star, will coach the team.

Here’s the Cavaliers’ schedule. The games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

• Friday: vs. Washington, 9 p.m. at Cox Pavilion.

• Saturday: vs. Chicago, 9:30 p.m., at Thomas & Mack Center.

•  Monday:  vs. Indiana, 5 p.m. at Cox Pavilion.

Smith returned to Dayton's campus in June and was the first player to sign the Alumni Board. Smith finished his Dayton career with 1,289 points in 2017 and ranks 28th in school history. He started his professional career last year in Australia and played in 27 games for the Cairns Taipans, averaging 10.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

Smith then returned to Ohio to play for the Canton Charge, the Cavaliers’ affiliate in the NBA G-League. He averaged 14.3 points, 8.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds. He shot 51.9 percent from the floor and 52.3 percent from 3-point range. He had his best game — 26 points and 10 assists — in the final game March 23.
