Trotwood-Madison’s announcement it had been voted out of the GWOC

Trotwood-Madison High School was notified on Wednesday that its Greater Western Ohio Conference membership was ending.

By an 8-1 vote, the Rams were informed they have until the end of the 2018-19 school year to remain in the conference.

Athletic directors from the eight eventual remaining GWOC schools – Beavercreek, Centerville, Fairmont, Miamisburg, Northmont, Springboro, Springfield and Wayne – all voted Trotwood out. GWOC Commissioner Eric Spahr voted for Trotwood staying. Trotwood did not vote.

The following is the release announcing that decision.

“On February 7, 2018, ten of the twenty member districts in the Greater Western Ohio Conference (GWOC) provided notification of their intentions to withdraw from the GWOC. This departure left the nine largest districts and the smallest district, Trotwood Madison, as the ten remaining members of the GWOC.

“On November 9, 2018, Lebanon also notified the GWOC of their intention to exit the conference and join the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.

“These actions unfortunately left an uneven number of districts which presents extreme and ongoing difficulties for the member school districts at all levels of competition. In order to address these circumstances, on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, the remaining member districts of the GWOC voted pursuant to Article II, Section 9 of the GWOC Constitution to dismiss Trotwood Madison from the conference with one year notice as provided in the GWOC Constitution.

“This decision was appropriate due to the issues presented which are further compounded by the large disparity in enrollment between Trotwood Madison and the other member districts. The large enrollment difference results in Trotwood Madison not being able to offer an athletic program as comprehensive as other member schools, particularly in the number of teams below the varsity level and in a variety of sports.

“The remaining member school districts believe it is in the best interest of the conference and the student athletes represented to maintain an eight member school conference where all members offer similarly comprehensive athletic programs.

“Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year GWOC membership will include Beavercreek, Centerville, Fairmont, Miamisburg, Northmont, Springboro, Springfield and Wayne.”
