Westbeld, Notre Dame stun UConn to reach NCAA women’s title game

Former Fairmont standout Kathryn Westbeld is headed to the national championship game.

Westbeld and her Notre Dame teammates stunned top-ranked and unbeaten UConn 91-89 in overtime in the semifinals Friday night at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.

Arike Ogunbowale drained a long jumper with 1 second left for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame (34-3) will face Mississippi State (37-1) in Sunday’s title game at 6 p.m.

Westbeld, a senior forward, scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists.

UConn (36-1) railled from a 79-74 deficit in the final 21 seconds of regulation to force OT.
