Second of two blue moons in 2018 will be visible this weekend

2018 is a special year when it comes to full moons, according to Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

In January, we had two full moons, one was actually a super blue blood moon (a super moon, the second of the month during a lunar eclipse).

March is also a special month as there will be two full moons. The first full moon was March 1, but another full moon will arrive Saturday, March 31. The moon is full around 8:36 a.m., the day before Easter Sunday.

Since the full moon on Saturday is the second full moon of the month, it will be a blue moon. Remember though, the second full moon in a month doesn’t actually change colors.

2018 is rare because there were two blue moons or four full moons, in two months. This doesn't happen very often. Actually, the last time there were two blue moons in a year was 1999 and 1915. The next time it will happen is 2037.
