The fireball sightings were mainly from Iowa but stretched as far away as Indiana. A fireball is just a very bright meteor. It is as bright as the planet Venus. Thousands occur each day but they typically happen over the ocean or when the sky is too bright to see.

A fireball can produce two types of trails behind them. The first is a train that glows and could last for a few minutes. This type is typically seen at night. During the day a smoke trail could occur and this looks like the contrails that airplanes usually leave behind on a clear day.
