Timeline: What happened in the year since Sugarcreek teen went missing after father’s murder?

More than a year passed before Jacob Caldwell, a Sugarcreek Twp. teen who went missing days after witnessing the death of his father Robert Caldwell, was found.

Since then, the police investigation into the slaying led to indictments, including Jacob’s mother and Robert Caldwell’s ex-wife, the alleged shooter, and four others.

Timeline of events

Aug. 28, 2018: Jacob Caldwell, now 15, is found safe, according to Sugarcreek Twp. police. Jacob went missing days after his father's slaying. The FBI issued a $15,000 reward for information leading to Jacob's whereabouts. In the days following the one-year anniversary of Jacob's father's death, Jacob's photo and information was put on digital billboards in a renewed effort to locate the teen.

March 2018: Authorities announced six people were indicted in Robert Caldwell's death. Sterling H. Roberts, 35, and Caldwell's ex-wife Tawnney M. Caldwell, 34, of Centerville, were indicted on charges of murder and may be eligible for the death penalty.Four others were also charged.

February 2018: Five of six suspects identified in Robert Caldwell's death are arrested by local authorities.

Aug. 21, 2017: Jacob Caldwell is reported missing by his paternal grandparents in Sugarcreek Twp. Police said surveillance video appeared to capture Jacob in the parking lot of a local Walmart, where he may have met someone who helped him disappear.

Aug. 19, 2017: The alleged shooter, Sterling Roberts, 35, was arrested in South Carolina after he allegedly shot at a deputy in Spartanburg, S.C. Roberts remains in custody in South Carolina pending court proceedings there.

Aug. 15, 2017: Robert Caldwell, 35, was gunned down in the afternoon outside the Claypool building on Linden Avenue in Riverside.
